Alan Gray

I have been actively involved in the livestock trade since leaving The Glasgow High School of Glasgow in 1986.  Initially I worked as trainee Auctioneer at the former John Swan & Sons Plc (now Harrison & Hetherington) based in Edinburgh.   Nearly four years later I moved on to Reston Market where my main responsibility was selling fat, store and breeding sheep.  As we were a 2 Auctioneer market and under the tutelage of Brian Sweenie, I learned all aspects of selling anything livestock and farm machinery related by auction and privately treaty.  Thereafter I set up independently, with the aim of filling part of the gap left by the market closure.  I have traded privately ever since and still serve clients who used to attend Reston, although admittedly the next generation!

In 2016 I relocated to Hawick and leased a small office in the town centre.  As the business grew, I relocated to a larger joint office and Reiki Alternative Healing Clinic at 1 Noble Place in Hawick.  Having been diagnosed bipolar myself 25 years ago, stress management, alternate healing and mental health in general is a subject I am passionate about, so joint premises seemed apt.

Having grown up a farm manager’s daughter on a hill farm in Rothbury,  Northumberland,  fuelled my interest in all things four legged.   I had an idyllic childhood learning the vagaries of producing store lambs on a hard hill to sell in the term sales at the local market.  We also managed a small herd of Shorthorn cows and trained Collie dogs.

My brother John left home to manage a flock of pedigree Suffolk and commercial sheep, in addition to a herd of Registered Highland Cows at East Learmouth in Cornhill on Tweed.  Spending time with John fuelled a passion to produce Suffolks and I still sell Shearlings in the back end along with daughter Ailee who is exceptionally keen on her flock of  Oxfords.  I have a small commercial flock if Cheviot Ewes.

My mother was a highly intuitive person and conversations with her opened my mind to alternative therapies and thinking .

I met Alan as a client in Kelso before he moved to Hawick to start his business.  The premises at Noble Place lends itself perfectly to being shared.  Banter between the two of us is usually excellent and normally centres around all things livestock.
